Christmas in Australia – Yay!!
Forget about those scenes of Christmas carollers all rugged up and wandering around in the snow that we get from American television – Aussie Christmas carols are a whole different kind of event.
Here we throw out rugs for the family and wait in the glorious evening warmth for the sun to go down enough for candlelight to actually be seen. A get together for the whole neighbourhood, with drinks and nibbles, kids running around, tons of boisterous happy singing, and if we’re lucky, sometimes even fireworks!
If you are excited as we are about belting out a few carols – here is our list of events in the Sutherland Shire where you can really get in the spirit.
ENGADINE
Carols for the People
Where: Cooper Street Park
When: Friday 13th December
Time: 6pm – 9pm
Family event, featuring food stalls, live bands, singers and dancing groups full of local talent. Santa Claus will be making an appearance before the kids’ bedtime.
PORT HACKING
Carols by Cruiser

LILLI PILLI
Where: Lilli Pilli Oval
When: Friday 6th December
Time: 5pm-8pm
Lilli Pilli Public School’s P&C will host a Christmas Carols event, for the community to enjoy at Lilli Pilli Oval.
CRONULLA
Carols on the Oval
Where: Cronulla South Public School

Details: Cronulla Public School Invites everyone to bring a picnic and join in the fun!
Christmas Brass on the Grass
Where: Gunnamatta Park
When: Sunday 8th December
Time: 6pm – 9pm
Sutherland Shire Brass band will be hosting a Carols by Candlelight for whole the community to enjoy. There will be a sausage sizzle and glow sticks for sale, plus a visit from Santa and his elves. Bring a picnic and have fun.
HEATHCOTE
Carols Among the Gum Trees
Where: Bush reserve Dillwynnia Grove, (Rear 48A)
When: Saturday 7th December
Time: 5:30pm – 7:30pm
Hosted by Engadine Congregational Church. A free BBQ and kids entertainment, followed by carols – bring your picnic rug or folding chairs and join in.
MIRANDA
Carols in the Park
Where: Seymour Shaw Park
When: Sunday 15th December
Time: 6pm – 9.30pm
The biggest Christmas Carols Spectacular in the Sutherland Shire featuring, kids’ activities and pre-show activities from 6pm, plus food stalls, live nativity, live entertainment, glowsticks, fireworks and more. Hosted by Gymea Baptist Church.
MENAI
Carols in the Park
Where: Parc Menai
When: Sunday 15th December
Time: 5pm – 8.30pm
BBQ sausage sizzle and drinks available, including a coffee cart. And for the kids, there will be face painting, a petting zoo, jumping castle, glowsticks and a visit from Santa! Bring your picnic rugs and chairs, Christmas cheer and singing voices.
LOFTUS
Open Air Christmas Carols
Where: Cnr Loftus and Tenth Aves, Loftus
When: Saturday 21st December
Time: 6pm-7.30pm
St John’s Anglican Church will be hosting community open air Christmas Carols at Loftus Reserve
KURNELL
Christmas Carols at Marton Park
Where: Kurnell Village Christmas Carols, 131 Captain Cook Drive Kurnell
When: Saturday 21st December
Time: 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Christmas Carols at Marton Park in the seaside suburb of Kurnell with a BBQ, family fun and more. Bring your picnic and rug, but note that Marton Park is an alcohol free zone.
SUTHERLAND
Carols by Candlelight
Where: Woronora Memorial Park
When: 7th December
Time: 6.30pm – 9pm
All welcome for a wonderful evening of carols led by The Christmas Cracker band, kids entertainment, special visit by Santa, sausage sizzle, and so much more. Bring your picnic blanket and enjoy a magical evening in the true spirit of Christmas.
In support of this community event a donation for a candle or carols booklet will be given to Anglicare Toys’n’Tucker Christmas Appeal.
Carols by Candlelight
Where: Forby Gardens
When: Tuesday 24th December
Time: 8pm-9.30pm
Sutherland Uniting Church will once again host their ‘Carols by Candlelight’ amongst the beautiful blooming flowers of the Forby Sutherland Community Gardens in Sutherland this year.
