Walking into a gym for the first time can be intimidating at any age. For a teenage girl who has never lifted weights, used gym equipment or followed a training program before, knowing where to begin can be the biggest hurdle.
Young Mutha is an in-person strength training program created specifically for girls aged 12 and over. Run by local women’s running and strength squad Mutha Runner, the program gives teens a structured and supportive place to learn how to train properly, without being expected to already know their way around a gym.
Term 3 begins on Tuesday 21 July, with strength sessions held at Genisys Gym in Miranda.
Strength training designed for teen girls
Young Mutha is delivered in a group training environment, but every girl is given a program suited to her current ability.
At the beginning of the term, participants complete initial testing and are placed into a beginner, intermediate or advanced program based on their previous experience. This means a teen who has never stepped inside a gym can train alongside girls who may be further along, while still completing exercises appropriate for her.
Multiple coaches are present during the sessions to guide the girls through their programs, demonstrate exercises, correct technique and help them build confidence using gym equipment.
The focus is not about appearance or keeping up with fitness influencers. It is about learning safe training habits, understanding correct technique, and building strength that lasts longer than the term. Because when girls feel strong, they become unstoppable.
When and where the girls train
Strength sessions are held at Genisys Gym in Miranda every Tuesday and Thursday during the school term.
Families can choose from:
- 4pm to 5pm
- 5pm to 6pm
Each session runs for one hour. Girls joining Young Mutha for the first time must attend the 5pm session during weeks one and two. This gives beginners the right introduction to the program before settling into their regular training routine.
Membership includes entry to Genisys Gym during Young Mutha sessions, so families do not need to purchase a separate gym membership.
Strength and running sessions included
Depending on the membership selected, girls can attend up to two strength sessions each week, as well as unlimited Mutha Runner running sessions.
The running squad meets at Wanda Surf Club in Cronulla at 6am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. These sessions are included for Young Mutha members who would also like to work on their running and general fitness.
There is no requirement for girls to already be sporty, confident in the gym or experienced with weights. The program is designed to meet them at their current level and help them progress from there.
Young Mutha has now been running for more than 12 months, with 70 girls participating in the program so far. More than 80 per cent have returned from one term to the next.
