We all know the feeling. Your kids are growing up way too fast, your camera roll is full of blurry snaps, and you keep meaning to book a proper family photoshoot… one day. But when that day comes, how do you even start choosing the right photographer?
It’s about more than just pretty pictures.
We’ve teamed up with Kylie Petts, owner of Wonderlight Photography and a local mum who knows a thing or two about freezing time in the most beautiful way. Kylie captures real moments – the snuggles, the giggles, the chaos, and the calm – and turns them into images that feel as good as they look.
Here, Kylie shares her personal take on how to choose the right photographer for your family, whether it’s your first session or your fifth.
It’s not just about photos. It’s about memories.
I believe the best way to create images you truly love is by making real memories. Your memories.
This belief is at the heart of everything I do. Every session is designed not just to take photos, but to create an experience. A space where you can be fully present, laugh freely, and connect deeply with the people you love most.
My hope is that years from now, your children will look at these images and not just see a photo, but feel something. A warm, familiar feeling. A core memory of time spent together. A snapshot of love that still lives on in their hearts and on the walls of your home.
And honestly, one of my favourite things is hearing a dad at the end of a session say,
“That was actually… really fun.”
Because that’s when I know we didn’t just take photos. We made memories worth keeping.
How to choose the right photographer
- Choose someone whose work you love. It sounds simple, but your photographer’s style should speak to you. Look at how they use light, how they edit, and how they capture emotion
- See yourself in their images. Can you picture your family in the moments they’ve captured? Does their work feel like a natural fit for you
- Look for feeling, not just perfection. The best images make you feel something. They tell a story. That emotional connection is what makes a photo meaningful
- Check for consistency. A few standout images are great, but you want a full gallery that flows beautifully and reflects your whole session.
It’s worth investing in what matters
Of course, price matters. I’m a mum too, I get it. But this is about more than getting a good deal.
Think of it like buying a sofa for your living room. You wouldn’t choose one you didn’t like just because it was cheaper. You’re going to look at it every day. Photos are the same. They deserve to be something you love, over and over again.
Let’s tell your story
Family photography is more than a photoshoot. It’s a moment to pause and be present. To cuddle your kids, laugh at the chaos, and soak it all in.
If my work speaks to you, if you can see your family in my images, and if you feel like I might be the right fit, I’d love to help capture your story.
You have the words to tell your family’s story. I’d love to help give you the pictures.
