How super is the Supercrumb? We put the new and improved Go! Kidz nuggets to the test.
Have you heard about the Shire-based kids’ meal delivery service making waves across Sydney?
We first tried Go! Kidz meals back in July and wrote a full review on a variety of the dinners (and desserts!) from their healthy kids meal range. In case you missed it, here you can find the Go! Kidz Meal Reviews which were based on the experiences of Mums of the Shire team’s very own fussy little eaters.
Though we’d been gifted the meals, the reviews were not paid for and the Go! Kidz team had explicitly asked us to give completely honest reviews. They are, after all, a relatively new business and are constantly looking to improve on the products they’re making.
While there was plenty we loved from the get-go, one piece of feedback that popped up in our previous reviews, was that without deep-frying or pan-frying the fish and chicken nuggets (which use the same crumb-coating), the dry crumbs were not loved by the kids. It’s fantastic that they were healthy, but we all know that if you can’t get kids to actually eat the healthy food in front of them then it’s not much good to anyone.
So we were excited to learn, and we’re sure you will be too, that Go! Kidz has taken customer feedback on board and worked to develop and re-launch their chicken and fish nuggets.
Go! Kidz have gone back to the drawing board to re-invent the crumb-coating and replaced it with a mighty new ‘Supercrumb’.
The Supercumb 2.0 combines wholemeal Panko crumbs with Quinoa, Couscous and no less than six seeds (Chia, Pumpkin, Sunflower, Sesame, Hemp and Poppy) but has been designed to be closer in taste and texture to the nuggets our kids are familiar with – without any additives or preservatives!
And you may not believe it when you try them but the new version is even healthier than the original (still scoring a 4.5 health rating out of 5).
The Verdict…
It reached a scorching 40 degrees last Sunday. After hiding from the heat for most of the day it finally dropped a few degrees just before dinner time so we popped down to the beach for a ‘quick dip’ to cool off before settling in for the evening. It always takes longer than expected to wrangle my kids to the beach so by the time we got there it was already nearing time to leave.
I gave my kids the 5-minute warning then remembered… we had Go! Kidz nuggets in the freezer at home. It was still beautiful down at Wanda beach so knowing we had that ever-so-quick and easy dinner waiting for us meant we didn’t have to rush so much and we ended up staying and playing ‘til 7pm.
When we arrived home all sandy and exhausted I was tempted to throw the nuggets in a pot of olive oil for the 5-minute-dinner, but I don’t love deep frying and our little convection oven was sitting on the bench so I thought I’d give that a whirl. I threw a packet of chicken nuggets in and a few of the fish nuggets (just to sample), a quick spray of olive oil and 15 minutes later dinner was done!
My kids loved the original nuggets deep-fried but these ones were just as good oven-baked. I completely over-estimated the amount of nuggets I needed (you can cut each nugget into quarters for kiddie bit-size pieces) so ended up with an adult serve for myself. The juicy new-look nuggets are as tasty as they are healthy. And they’re perfect for pulling from the freezer the next time you’re heading out but forgot to organise dinner the babysitter can serve up!
As soon as the kids were down I jumped online to stock up for the holidays. These nuggets (fish and chicken) were yummy, easy, healthy and affordable. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to add a few chocolate brownies to the cart as well. It’s a no brainer for me!
