Those of you with school-aged kids would now be settled into the routine of school pick-up and afternoon activities. This busy routine can often make it hard to find time to plan, shop for and prepare a variety of delicious AND healthy meals that will please everyone.
Luckily, locally-based kids meal range Go! Kidz has come to the rescue once again, by expanding their range and adding to it some firm kids’ favourites, as well as a selection of dishes that introduce kids to some new and exciting flavours, which will soon become staples in your household!
If this is the first time you’ve heard about Go! Kidz, where have you been? Kidding! We know you’ve been stretched from pillar to post juggling 101 mum-life duties with one hand and desperately trying to find time for yourself, your partner and your friends with the other. To catch you up though, Go! Kidz launched last year and is a Shire-based meal delivery service that caters to kids. You can read our previous reviews of their healthy kids range here.
What’s new?
We were thrilled to learn that they’ve recently added even more new meals to the menu. They’ve now introduced a range of burgers that your kids are as likely to love as McDonalds, but which don’t contain any additives or preservatives.
Both the hormone-free chicken and grass-fed beef patties incorporate hidden veges, which your kids won’t even realise they’re eating. They’re served on specially-made low GI high-fibre rolls that will keep your kids full a lot longer than a Happy Meal (so that “I’m hungry” will be stricken from the list of things they’ll be emerging from their rooms to say at bedtime) and each gets a 4 out of 5 health-star rating.
They’ve also added pizzas to the menu! Forget about waiting 45 minutes for delivery, these healthy pizzas can be quickly oven-baked whenever you’re ready and are the perfect portion-size for young kids. They come in Tomato and cheese, BBQ chicken and sweet potato or Roast pumpkin, tomato and pesto. Unlike what you’ll find in a supermarket freezer, they’re all-natural and free from processed meats and harmful preservatives.
The sooner you can get kids to expand their palettes the better! So for kids who aren’t afraid of trying something new, Go! Kidz has now also launched an “Adventurous Palates” range. It includes Potato Gnocchi with Chicken, Tomato & Pumpkin, Roast Pumpkin Ravioli with Tomato Sugo & Mozzarella, Roast Chicken & Veggie Pie, Chicken & Veggie Nasi Goreng, Veggie Soba Noodle Stir Fry and Butter chicken. From just $4.95 you can be serving up restaurant-quality, all-natural nutritious meals in minutes so you can conserve your energy for the tasks that really need it!
Our honest opinion
This all sounded great in theory but, as always, it’s the kids who’ll deliver the final verdict…
When the kids spotted the Go! Kidz delivery at the front door they were almost as excited as me. The nuggets, now a weekly go-to, have been a household favourite since we reviewed them here so we were eager to see what new dishes we were getting spoilt with this time around.
The whole range was deliciously healthy with a real authentic, home-made feel and were surprisingly quick and easy to heat and serve. Some dishes were taken to better than others, which is to be expected (as we know how picky our little eaters can be) but there were three meals that really stood out – The Butter Chicken, the Pizzas and the Burgers.
The kids were both really keen to try the Butter Chicken, a creamy and mild curry with rice (something very new to them). We were only given one portion of this particular meal so I halved it and served it as an appetiser. They inhaled it like I’ve never seen before and were left licking their little lips asking for more. Winner winner chicken dinner!
The pizzas come in three yummy topping choices and I was really impressed to hear the kids favourite “bbq” chicken flavour had been made from scratch with all-natural and healthy ingredients using pineapple juice for a slight sweetness.
The tomato and cheese topping gets points for its versatility. Serve it as is or add your own toppings if you feel like being a little bit fancy. We chose to add some pineapple pieces for extra sweetness and we might even add a little ham next time around (Hawaiin lovers here).
The Roast Pumpkin, Tomato & Pesto Pizza was just as delish as the rest but comes in as runner up behind the other yummy flavours as I made the rookie error of announcing it as the “healthiest” choice. #mumfail
The burgers were our number one favourite as they made for an extra fun meal. The kids loved getting involved, choosing from chicken or beef patties (packed with hidden veggies) then stacking their burgers with their choice of toppings (lettuce, tomato, cheese etc). The buns are the perfect size for little fingers with two out of three kids being satisfied with one burger and the older kid wanting half a burger more.
I have no doubt these top three picks will too become regulars on the Johnson weekly dinner menu!
