You might be looking at your child and thinking; “where did my baby go?” The preschool stage is a time when children are gaining independence and becoming more confident; they’re starting to develop and understand their role in the world.
At KU Sutherland Preschool childhood is celebrated. When they play and explore, children’s imaginations and curiosity are sparked – they enjoy learning and are inspired to continue learning more.

“It’s all about harnessing those teachable moments; finding opportunities in everyday play, to explore new concepts and ideas.” Said Christine Legg, KU CEO. “We believe that the first five years of a child’s life are significant for their future growth and development, and we aim to help all children achieve their potential in their own individual way.”
Christine continued: “We embrace the values of the Early Years Learning Framework and the National Quality Framework, which are reflected in our interactions, curriculum planning and documentation. Our aim is to create an environment where all children feel secure and confident and develop a sense of belonging.”
Quality Programs – Matching Interests with Learning
KU Sutherland Preschool delivers a play-based learning program that builds on children’s interests and strengths and acknowledges children as active contributors to their learning. Developmentally appropriate learning experiences are provided to encourage exploration, creativity and experimentation and extend on children’s existing knowledge.
KU Sutherland is unique in that it is a CCS Preschool, so the hours are longer than traditional preschool, and parents can claim the CCS (like a long day care). However, KU Sutherland Preschool offers an exclusively preschool and transition to school program.
Local parents with children attending KU Sutherland preschool are united in their praise for the Centre’s Educators; one parent said: “The educators are the best! They have quality programs and I love how they match the children’s interests with their learning, it makes them excited to learn.”
Another local mum said: “I am thrilled with the staff and the play learning environment. My child has thrived in the 16 months he has been there and has responded amazingly to the way they teach.”
The preschool learning program is led by University qualified Early Childhood Teachers. The educational programs take a holistic approach to the development of each individual child, extending their competencies and skills as they prepare to make the transition to school.
What Does The Preschool Program Look Like?
Children are encouraged to develop positive relationships and connections so that they begin to trust in their ability to take responsibility and challenge ideas.
Children are provided with the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of learning experiences and activities, including gardening, arts and crafts, music and movement, physical play, block building, sand and water play, science experiments, early numeracy activities such as counting and measurement, and early literacy activities such as reading, drawing and writing.
Other activities include group games where children can take ownership and be leaders in their play. Children are also encouraged to engage in small group experiences that build on their capabilities and confidence, as well as with their educators in caring for their learning environment through sustainability practices and caring for each other.
A Warm and Nurturing Environment
The learning environment is wholly nurturing with parents praising the warmth and encouragement their children receive.
“I would like to say how incredibly grateful we are for all the love, care and attention you express with my daughter.” Said one parent. “She treasures KU Sutherland and their consistent, responsive and respectful approach is helping her to feel safe and confident. Thank you.”
While another parent said: “Two of my three children have attended KU Sutherland Preschool. Both have been nurtured not only educationally, but also emotionally and socially and the time spent has given them a great head start for their life at school. I greatly look forward to when my third child will be attending.”
Offering extended preschool hours, from 8am until 4pm, KU Sutherland Preschool is also open over school holidays to ensure convenience for parents.

About KU
At KU, children find their voice. From their very first visit, until they transition to school, KU children discover their sense of self and learn to respect others. Curious and social, they’re ready for the world. They’re happy with who they are, and interested in who you are. No matter how big the conversation, they have their say. Throughout KU’s 140 services, children experience high quality early education preschool, child care, early intervention and inclusion programs, and small acts of kindness happen every day. They learn it’s OK to be different, and we can all be different, together.
