Being a parent is hard work, no doubt about that. And if your child is struggling with difficulties such as anxiety, depression, bullying or anger management, you may be considering extra help. Or, if they have the additional challenges of ADHD, autism or trauma-related issues, you may already be some way down the path of therapy and searching for more specialised psychological therapy to help children deal with the grief and frustration of living with these issues.
Journey Psychology is a specialised play therapy, psychoanalytic psychology practice, treating clients from 3 -20 years of age.
Run by Clinical Psychologist, Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist and published author Monique Cohen, Journey Psychology focuses on resolving the underlying issues behind behavioural problems and emotional dysregulation using play therapy amongst other evidence-based therapy techniques.
The play therapy techniques used involve talking and intense observation and clarification of the play demonstrated during the session. Children can choose from a sand tray, puppets, doll’s house, drawing, lego and a toy doctor’s kit to explore and express their feelings. As sessions develop, it is the interaction within the playing space where emotions are explored, diffused and able to be held without spilling into unhelpful behaviours.
Adolescent therapy also involves a mix of talking therapy and sometimes sand tray therapy. It provides a creative medium for them to depict a picture or story about their world and in doing so, often enables them to see it from a different perspective or to shed some intensity around difficult emotions.
Monique Cohen has been a fully registered and trained Clinical Psychologist working for over 30 years and operating a private practice in the Sutherland Shire for over 15 years.
She has held a number of different positions including Community Development Coordinator and Youth Health Educator, and spent over 20 years in the Department of Juvenile Justice working clinically with adolescents and supervising other clinicians. She currently also regularly trains second year Medical students from the University of Sydney.
Today, she uses psychodynamic therapy – a form of talk and play therapy that explores the connection between a patient’s past experiences and their current state of mind – as her preferred method of getting to the root of dysregulated behaviour.
She believes there is no “one size fits all” approach to therapy as every client deserves a considered, tailor-made therapy designed following an in-depth consultation, analysis of their history, consideration of their current situation and discussion of their hopes for the future.
