For Dr Dean Conrad, obstetrics is about much more than appointments, scans and due dates. It is about being part of one of the happiest and most important moments in a family’s life.
As a Sutherland Shire obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr Conrad cares for women through pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, as well as supporting women with fertility concerns, gynaecological care and pelvic floor health. Consulting from Anaria in Miranda and caring for patients at Kareena Private Hospital, he offers personalised, evidence-based care with a relaxed and supportive approach.
Now a father himself to two young boys, Dr Conrad says he has an even greater appreciation for how special and life-changing pregnancy, birth and early parenthood can be.
What led Dr Conrad into obstetrics?
Dr Conrad was drawn to obstetrics because it allows him to build relationships with women and their families throughout pregnancy, then guide them through the journey of meeting their baby.
Every pregnancy is unique, and for Dean, it is a privilege to be trusted with such an important part of someone’s life.
His work also extends beyond pregnancy. Dr Conrad has a background in fertility and reproductive medicine, and many of his patients first meet him while they are trying to conceive. Being able to support women from fertility care through to pregnancy and eventually birth is one of the most rewarding parts of his practice.
When should you book your first appointment?
Dean recommends making contact as soon as you know you are pregnant.
Most women will have their first obstetric appointment between eight and ten weeks of pregnancy, but booking early helps ensure availability and gives you time to organise any early pregnancy tests or scans.
If you have not had your first scan yet, that is completely fine. Dean can often perform an ultrasound during your appointment, which means many of those early questions can be answered on the same day.
What is the difference between public and private pregnancy care?
Both public and private maternity care provide excellent care, but they can feel quite different.
In the public system, pregnancy care is usually shared between a team of midwives and doctors with different levels of experience. You may see different members of the team throughout pregnancy, and if a doctor is involved in your delivery, it may be someone you have not previously met.
With private care, the same experienced obstetrician cares for you throughout pregnancy and will usually be present for your delivery. Many women value the continuity and personalised care that comes from building a relationship with a doctor who knows them and their pregnancy.
As part of the Anaria Women’s Health team, Dean patients also have access to 24/7 specialist obstetric cover. All doctors within the practice have access to patient records, helping ensure seamless care whenever support is needed.
Private hospitals also tend to offer a different inpatient experience, with private rooms, greater flexibility for partners and visitors, and hotel-style amenities that many families appreciate during their stay.
What support can women expect throughout pregnancy?
Pregnancy care is about much more than scans and check-ups.
Dean supports women through the full journey, from pre-pregnancy planning and fertility concerns through to pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.
This includes discussing screening options, monitoring mum and baby’s wellbeing, managing complications if they arise, and helping women feel informed and confident throughout each stage.
A large part of early pregnancy care is reassurance. Common questions include whether everything is progressing normally, how much nausea and fatigue is expected, what exercise is safe, which foods to avoid, medication safety, miscarriage risk and what symptoms are considered normal.
Dean’s approach is to give clear advice, answer questions openly and help women understand what to expect as pregnancy progresses.
How would Dean describe his approach to care?
Dean wants his patients to feel relaxed, supported and comfortable asking any question, no matter how big or small. He also prefers to be called Dean, helping create a friendly and approachable environment from the very first appointment.
Pregnancy can be exciting, but it can also bring uncertainty, especially with plenty of opinions from friends, family and the internet. Dean sees his role as helping women filter through that noise, providing clear advice and making sure they feel informed and confident.
Most importantly, he wants patients to know they have someone in their corner. Someone who will advocate for them, support their choices and help them navigate the journey to meeting their baby.
His website also describes his philosophy as compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to each patient’s needs, with a focus on helping women feel heard, respected and supported.
What should women look for in a Sutherland Shire obstetrician?
Dr Conrad believes it is important to choose someone you trust and feel comfortable with.
Every obstetrician has a slightly different style, so it is worth finding someone who listens, communicates clearly and whose approach aligns with your expectations and goals for pregnancy and birth.
Pregnancy is a journey, and having a healthcare provider you feel comfortable talking to can make a huge difference.
Dr Conrad’s areas of interest beyond pregnancy
While Dr Conrad loves caring for women throughout pregnancy, he also supports women at every stage of their reproductive journey.
Many patients first meet him while trying to conceive. Others see him after completing their family for concerns such as endometriosis, fibroids, heavy periods or pelvic floor symptoms following childbirth.
Dr Conrad’s areas of interest include pregnancy care, infertility, endometriosis, fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, urinary incontinence, prolapse and menopause. He has also completed advanced training in minimally invasive pelvic surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgical treatments.
For women experiencing pelvic floor concerns, Dr Conrad has a particular interest in urogynaecology and offers a holistic approach to pelvic floor health, working closely with pelvic floor physiotherapists and continence nurses.
Caring for women at Kareena Private Hospital
Dean says Kareena Private Hospital has a wonderful community feel that many families appreciate.
It is a friendly, close-knit maternity unit where patients often see familiar faces and develop strong relationships with the staff caring for them.
At the same time, Kareena offers modern maternity facilities, experienced midwives, theatre services and special care nursery support. The renovated postnatal ward has also created beautiful, comfortable rooms where families can spend those first special days getting to know their new baby.
For Dr Conrad, Kareena offers a lovely balance of personalised care, community atmosphere and high-quality facilities close to home.
What does Dr Conrad wish every pregnant woman knew?
There is no such thing as a silly question.
Pregnancy can be exciting, overwhelming, joyful and occasionally frightening, often all in the same week. Asking questions, seeking support and staying informed are all important parts of the journey.
Having a healthcare team you trust can make all the difference.
