If you’re searching for the ultimate school holiday outing that doesn’t break the bank, this is it. The Play! Kids Festival is back at The Pavilion Performing Arts Centre from October 1 to 5, bringing five full days of live shows, creative workshops, and hands-on fun designed to delight kids of all ages (and give parents a breather).
It is shaping up to be one of Sydney’s biggest performing arts festivals for kids, with a program that is as diverse as it is exciting. Whether your little ones love singing, dancing, drumming or diving into imaginative worlds, there is something here for everyone.
Star Power: Emma Memma Headlines
ARIA Award-winner Emma Memma returns to the stage on October 5 with her brand-new show, Dance Island Party. Known for blending music, movement and AUSLAN sign language, Emma’s performance celebrates inclusiveness and connection through colour, sound and fun. Her last visit to Sutherland sold out quickly, so families are encouraged to book early.
Dive into the Deep with Shark Dive
Making its premiere at the festival, the newly staged version of Shark Dive by acclaimed puppetry group Erth takes kids on a magical underwater journey. With giant puppets and vivid storytelling, it is an imaginative celebration of Australia’s marine life. Adding to the fun, local footy favourite Jesse Ramien will appear on October 4 for a special meet and greet with lucky ticket holders.
Beats, Books and Brilliant Moments
The program also features The Box Show by Junkyard Beats, a Fringe Festival award-winning performance that transforms everyday objects into drums and dance props, as well as IMAGINE LIVE, a musical theatre adaptation of Alison Lester’s much-loved book Imagine. Expect interactive fun, digital puppetry and original songs that will keep kids smiling from start to finish.
Workshops and Free Family Fun
In addition to the main performances, the festival includes:
- Dance and art workshops from just $15
- Play! Pass for $50 offering a full day of activities
- Free daily Storytime, foyer games and colouring competitions
There is something happening from morning to afternoon, with workshops starting at 8.45am, and performances at 10am and 1pm.
Easy, Local and Affordable
The Pavilion Performing Arts Centre is located in Sutherland and is just a short walk from the station. It is fully accessible and family-friendly, with food and drinks available on site all week. With performances from $29, this is one school holiday activity that ticks all the boxes.
