This easy-peasy day out is perfect for mums with little kids!
Como Pleasure Grounds
The picturesque Como Pleasure Grounds are a fantastic, peaceful spot to spend a morning with kids.
During the week especially, parking is plentiful, so you can grab your scooters and helmets and head straight in.
The kids usually spend a little bit of time riding around before making their way to the playground.
The playground has a large boat structure that little kids love playing all over and sliding down. There are also rockers, swings, a huge climbing net that even bigger kids will be entertained by, and a large spinning wheel the kids can ride.
With picnic tables, benches, BBQs and toilets right beside it, this is an ideal party spot or place for a family get-together.
My kids often gravitate to the rocks that you can quite easily climb up too and they sometimes make a game of mixing water with the red dirt to do “rock painting”. If this is a game your kids might enjoy, do not dress them in nice clothes!
If you happen to be visiting on a weekend, there’s a cute little craft store around the front of the marina that you might like to browse too.
After enough active fun, we decided to get something to eat. There are actually a few options right within the grounds. You might like to try the Waterfront Como Cafe for a full breakfast menu or seafood lunch, Thai from Thai Rim Nam, or simply grab some hot chips from the shop front right at the grounds’ entrance.
Our favourite spot here is Blackfish Cafe and as it was still a bit early for lunch we decided to have ourselves some morning tea treats.
Blackfish Cafe and Grill
If you haven’t been before, Blackfish Cafe is right within the Como Pleasure Grounds adjacent to the playground. They offer breakfast, lunch, or dinner and have an extensive menu for each course including a dedicated kids’ menu. Or you can do what we did and just stop in for some mid-morning refreshments with a beautiful view over the Como River.
Depending on whether your kids would rather keep running or not, you can choose to sit and eat while you enjoy the beautiful water news and look at the boats or get your food to take away and eat it at your leisure in the park while they run themselves ragged.
My kids got caramel and strawberry milkshakes and a yummy macaron each. Though they were small, I still had to help my daughter finish hers and didn’t mind one bit!
Como Bridge Walk
Kids who have energy left, or are still happy to scoot or be pushed in a pram, can then join you for a little walk across Como Bridge.
The path to cross the bridge is just beside the car park and marina so you won’t need to jump back in your car.
It’s just a quick walk, free from any traffic. Even with young kids, it will only take you ten minutes to go across and back the bridge. After your big day of exercise in the outdoors, you can then feel better about letting them have some screen time when you get home after your big day out!
What else is there to do with kids in Como?
Plenty! If you’ve got bigger kids, you might like to ditch the bridge walk for a trip over to the Como BMX track or maybe head across for lunch at Como Hotel.
