The latest playground to land in the Sutherland Shire is one worth a visit even if you aren’t just around the corner from Yowie Bay.
Kalang Lane Reserve is just a hop, skip and jump from the boat ramp and pontoon at the end of Wonga Road in Yowie Bay.
If you are driving there, you will most likely pass an older, smaller playground just a little further up on Wonga Road. Don’t let this confuse you, just keep heading towards the water until you spot the large colourful playground.
We visited on a warm day during the school holidays, when the park was reasonably busy, and parked alongside the park with no problems- there is ample street parking on two sides of the upgraded park. It is set quite close to the road and is completely open, so you may need to keep a very careful watch on your little kids if they are “runners”.
There are plenty of play equipment options at Kalang Reserve.
At the top of the park, there is a decent-sized climbing wall and net and a set of balance beams, jumping logs and sandstone blocks that form a sort of obstacle course across the bark.
All of the other play equipment is set on synthetic grass. The central and largest playground structure includes a small and large slide, multiple rock climbing walls and rope walls, climbing nets and a rope bridge suitable for competent little kids and an abacus and other sensory walls for the youngest children.
The swing set features a large netted basket swing, a standard swing and a combined swing comprised of a standard swing and a baby swing facing each other. There is also a mini, level roundabout that even toddlers can enjoy.
Older primary school children, teens and parents can make use of the static bars fitness system in the park while the little ones are playing too.
A shade cloth covers the play equipment, and there are some trees around the perimeter that offer some shade too.
There is a nice flat parcel of land (albeit unshaded) encircled by a bike and scooter path where you could spread out the picnic blanket for a party or family get together, or you can make use of the park benches and sandstone seating throughout the park.
The new range of amenities includes a full toilet block (of three toilets), a bubbler/water fill station and bins for your convenience too.
The Sutherland Shire Council recommends Kalang Lane Reserve for ages 2-12, but it offers the most value for those under six.
