Just in time for the school holidays, the Sutherland Shire Council has begun unveiling this year’s promised playground renewals. Canberra Road Reserve in Sylvania is the first of five new playground renewals to be completed in the Sutherland Shire in 2022. And it’s a beauty. It’s expansive and well thought out, and you won’t have any trouble finding a place to park as there is ample on-street parking.
Set on soft-fall astroturf (everyone’s favourite!), beneath a shade cloth, is the largest playground structure. It features two medium slides and a large spiral slide, a sliding pole, a climbing net, a rock climbing wall and rope bridges. While we were there, kids as young as two and as old as eight were playing on it happily. In this same space, you’ll find a large basket swing, a standard and baby swing and a police window for dramatic play.
Don’t forget to bring your bikes or scooters, because there is also an excellent scooter track that extends right throughout the park, featuring a round-about and cute miniature street signs.
The second section of the park is targeted at the littlies who will enjoy sand play, using the mini excavators (although one is already missing a seat!) and pretend play using the shop window.
You’ll also find balance poles, jumping blocks, a water station, and plenty of park benches spread around the park. There are loads of places to spread out for a picnic, kick a ball around and play tag.
It’s a great shame that there are no bins provided as there was already rubbish littered throughout the park on our visit.
There are no public toilets available here either, but you’re only a few minutes away from Southgate Sylvania where you can head if someone needs to go in a hurry. While you’re there, you can grab a bite to eat, visit the library, shop, or even go bowling.
